Holiday traditions around the world

'Tis the season of festivities, and in a delightful departure from our typical financial updates, let’s embrace the global spirit of celebration. Join us on this delightful exploration as we unveil five captivating holiday traditions from around the world. It's a journey filled with cultural richness and joyous diversity that is sure to add a sprinkle of excitement to your holiday season!

Iceland

In the enchanting Icelandic holiday tradition, the Yule Lads, a mischievous gang of troll-like creatures, embark on a 13-day journey leading up to Christmas, bringing both excitement and a hint of mischief to local children.

Each night, a distinct lad pays a visit, either bestowing gifts and sweets upon fortunate youngsters or, in less favorable circumstances, dishing out a peculiar form of punishment by leaving a shoe filled with not-so-delightful surprises—rotten potatoes. It's a whimsical blend of festive cheer and a touch of Yuletide unpredictability!

Bahamas

Escape to the sun-kissed paradise of the Bahamas, where the allure of turquoise waters meets the vibrant rhythms of Junkanoo—an annual extravaganza that transforms the islands into a pulsating carnival of celebration.

From December 26 to New Year's Day, Bahamians sway to the beats of cowbells, drums, and whistles, creating an irresistible tapestry of sound. Picture dancing troupes, numbering up to a thousand, adorned in dazzling costumes and elaborate headdresses, captivating the night in parades that kick off fashionably late at 2 a.m.

The revelry spills into the following day, with accolades showered upon the most awe-inspiring dance moves and the most stunning ensembles.

Italy

Step into the enchanting New Year's celebration in Italy, where a symphony of fireworks, bonfires, dancing, and delectable feasts marks the arrival of January 1st, also known as the feast day of San Silvestro. This festive occasion pays homage to the medieval saint who departed on December 31, 335 A.D., creating a timeless tradition that resonates across the Italian landscape.

As the clock ticks towards midnight, tables are adorned with a culinary masterpiece known as cotechino con lenticchie, a classic New Year's Eve dish that transcends taste buds. Crafted with slow-cooked pork sausage, cotechino, and lentils, this savory delight embodies the essence of Italian gastronomy. Paired with a bottle of sparkling Italian wine, it sets the stage for a delicious and promising start to the New Year.

Japan

Embark on a spiritual journey to Japan as the resonant echoes of Buddhist temple bells fill the air on Dmisoka, or New Year's Eve. In a ritual that spans the nation, each bell tolls 108 times, a profound gesture symbolizing the acknowledgment of human defilements in Buddhism—108 distinct notes for 108 facets of human nature, from ingratitude to envy and greed.

Following this melodic transition into the New Year is the toshi no yu, the final bath of the year. This cleansing ritual offers a symbolic renewal, allowing one to step into the upcoming year with a fresh perspective as the calendar turns. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the warmth of this tradition, symbolizing a purifying transition from the old to the new.

Completing this immersive experience is a steaming bowl of toshikoshi soba, a culinary tradition that goes beyond mere sustenance. Delight in the flavorful embrace of buckwheat noodles, said to usher in good luck and longevity for the year ahead.

Austria

Step into the chilling yet captivating realm of European folklore as we encounter Krampus, the formidable counterpart to the merry Santa Claus. With curled horns, fangs, and hooves, this legendary figure, deeply rooted in pre-Christian European traditions, takes on the formidable task of instilling fear in "naughty" children instead of gifting presents.

Throughout the month of December, Austrian villages come alive with Krampus parades that transport you into a world of eerie enchantment. Revelers don ominous costumes, complete with curled horns and fanged masks, while the night sky is ablaze with exploding fireworks that add a touch of both fright and spectacle to the festivities. Amid the bone-chilling atmosphere, onlookers seek warmth in the embrace of mugs filled with steaming spiced wine, creating a unique and unforgettable experience that straddles the line between frightful folklore and festive celebration.

By Chad Roope, CFA ®, Chief Investment Officer In times of economic uncertainty, it’s easy for investors to feel uneasy. Whether it’s inflation concerns, political events, or market downturns making headlines, short-term volatility can be unsettling. However, long-term investing strategies have consistently proven to be one of the most effective ways to build wealth and stay on track toward financial goals. Instead of reacting emotionally to market noise, long-term investors benefit from taking a step back and focusing on the bigger picture. Here’s why that mindset can make all the difference. The Stock Market Has Recovered from Every Major Crisis Over the last several decades, the U.S. stock market has faced recessions, geopolitical tensions, inflation spikes, and global pandemics. Despite it all, the market has continued to grow. Investors who stayed committed to their long-term investment strategy have historically been rewarded for their patience. This resilience, explained in the graph below, shows the importance of avoiding knee-jerk reactions and maintaining a diversified portfolio built for the long haul.   Timing the Market Can Hurt Long-Term Returns Many investors try to avoid losses by pulling out of the market during downturns. But trying to time the market—even with the best intentions—often results in missed opportunities. Some of the strongest market gains have occurred during periods of high volatility. Missing ev
